    The Description

Hot material rises. Cool material sinks. Easy enough to say—but does that mean students can explain why? Not necessarily. Sometimes “heat rises” is doing an impressive amount of scientific heavy lifting.

This printable convection currents activity makes students slow the process down. They sort and sequence changes in energy, particle spacing, density, and motion, then build a visual model that connects those changes rather than treating convection like a magic elevator.

    What Students Will Do

    • Recall and discuss what happens when a fluid warms or cools.

    • Cut, sort, and sequence convection-current event tabs.

    • Build a warm-side/cool-side model, adding flow arrows and particle representations.

    • Apply the model to three settings, including shorelines, heated rooms, and Earth's mantle.

    Why This Resource Is Different

I made this for the student who can say “warm stuff rises” with complete confidence but cannot explain what happens between warming and rising. That's the gap the sorting and modeling reveal.

Instead of telling students the sequence, you get to watch them construct it—and catch the moment someone puts rising before decreasing density. The structured and open modeling options provide support without doing all the thinking for them.

    What's Included?

    • Three pages of printable Convection Current Tabs.

    • Convection Current Model templates, including scaffolded and open versions.

    • Three real-world scenario mats.

    • Teacher setup directions and sequence support.

    The Details

Grades: approximately 5–9. Subject: Earth Science or physical science. Suggested time: about 30–50 minutes, depending on discussion.

Preparation: print the materials; students use scissors to separate and sequence tabs. Useful after an introduction to heat transfer and density.

    Printable student and teacher materials.
