The Description
How can a bowling ball sink while other objects in the same fish tank behave completely differently? Before students see a density equation, there's a mystery worth explaining.
This two-day density lesson begins with a fish-tank demonstration—live or by video—then builds toward mass, volume, density, and particle arrangements. Interactive A.L.O.T. notes help students keep track of what their model needs to explain.
What Students Will Do
Observe and discuss the fish tank demonstration.
Sketch and classify the objects based on evidence.
Connect mass and volume to density and floating or sinking.
Interpret particle models and complete interactive notes and practice.
Why This Resource Is Different
A fish-tank demonstration earns attention; the question is whether students use what they saw to explain why objects behave differently in water. 'Heavy things sink' is not quite going to cover it.
The lesson puts observation and modeling ahead of the density equation. Interactive notes about mass, volume, and particles then have a real job: helping students revise an explanation of something they have already watched.
