The Description
How can astronomers figure out what a distant star is like without ever touching it? This free science reading asks students to trace how observable evidence leads to scientific conclusions about stars.
Instead of highlighting random sentences, students learn to follow an evidence chain: what scientists can observe or measure, what that evidence allows them to infer, and how one conclusion leads to the next. It makes a purposeful introduction before students graph or analyze an H–R diagram.
What Students Will Do
Make an initial prediction and annotate a science passage with an explicit evidence-reading routine.
Underline observable or measurable evidence and box what astronomers infer from it.
Trace how brightness, distance, and other measurements help scientists characterize stars.
Use reading and discussion prompts to explain the scientific reasoning behind an H–R diagram.

Why This Resource Is Different
A student can underline 'hotter stars' and 'brighter stars' without ever sorting out what astronomers measured and what they inferred. Those are not the same thing, even if they end up in the same sentence.
This reading makes the evidence chain explicit: observable information, a scientific inference, and the reasoning that connects them. It is a short bridge into H–R diagram investigations, not a substitute for actually sorting and interpreting the stars.
