The Description
'Participate more' isn't especially helpful feedback to a student who doesn't know what productive scientific talk sounds like.
This free Scientific Thinking & Talk Rubric turns vague participation into observable moves: noticing patterns, explaining ideas, using evidence, and comparing or questioning models.
What Students Will Do
Use a one-page rubric and sentence starters during investigations.
Notice and describe patterns in evidence.
Build on, challenge, or revise classmates' explanations.
Reflect on the quality of their contributions, not just how often they spoke.
Why This Resource Is Different
I care much more about what students contribute to a discussion than whether they're the loudest person at the table.
The simple 0–3 scale and sentence starters give developing speakers a more concrete path into scientific conversation without needing the 'right answer' first.
