The Description
How do invisible atmospheric gases and a changing planetary surface influence Earth's temperature? In Gases & Ground, students investigate two connected mechanisms in Earth's climate system: what greenhouse gases do with infrared radiation, and how surface reflectivity changes the energy budget.
The investigation moves from initial models and predictions to simulation evidence, albedo investigation, class discussion, and model revision. Rather than treating the greenhouse effect as a vocabulary worksheet, students have to connect what happens at the molecular and surface levels to changes in energy flow.
What Students Will Do
Develop an initial explanation of energy moving into, through, and out of Earth's climate system.
Use simulation-based evidence to investigate which gases interact with infrared radiation.
Collect and analyze data about how different surfaces reflect or absorb incoming radiation.
Discuss greenhouse-gas and albedo effects, then revise the original climate-system model.
Use a final model and evidence checklist to explain temperature changes.
Why This Resource Is Different
I built this investigation for the student who can repeat ‘greenhouse gases trap heat’ but can't explain what the energy actually does—or how the ground beneath our feet matters. Students investigate infrared interactions and surface reflectivity as two connected mechanisms, not two vocabulary boxes to complete.
Their first climate models are meant to change. They test ideas using simulation evidence and albedo observations, then revisit the same model with a stronger account of energy flow. The teacher guide includes discussion prompts and model examples to help you listen for mechanism-level reasoning instead of settling for a diagram with all the right arrows.
