    The Description

A sealed box is a wonderful way to discover how convincing a first explanation can feel—right up until somebody finds evidence that doesn't fit.

In this inquiry lab, students gather clues about mystery-box contents, propose models, test them against new evidence, and revise their thinking. The point isn't winning the guessing game. It's seeing how scientists build explanations about things they cannot directly observe.

    What Students Will Do

    • Observe sealed mystery boxes and investigate clues with allowed tools.

    • Compare observations with possible contents and build labeled models.

    • Analyze provided X-ray-style clues and revise initial models.

    • Use scientific practices and crosscutting ideas to explain changes in their thinking.

    Why This Resource Is Different

My favorite moment is when two groups are both certain they've solved the mystery—and their models don't agree. That disagreement gives us a reason to ask what each model explains and what evidence would help us choose.
