The Description
Same house. Same words. Somehow an entirely different set of details suddenly seems important.
In The House, students read a short story more than once with a different purpose in mind. They discover that changing the question changes what they notice and which details they collect as evidence. It's a small shift with big consequences for how students approach complex readings in any subject.
What Students Will Do
Read a short story without a defined purpose
reread as a prospective house buyer
reread from a thief's perspective
compare what stood out and why.
Why This Resource Is Different
The text doesn't change, but students' attention does. That contrast makes something usually invisible about reading wonderfully obvious: purpose determines what counts as a relevant detail.
Rather than handing students another list of comprehension strategies, this activity lets them experience how choosing a reading goal changes the evidence they notice. It's a useful conversation before science readings, historical sources, or almost any unfamiliar text.
