    The Description

Why do astronomers need observations from different positions to figure out where Mars is? And why do two lines drawn on a model tell us something about a planet millions of kilometers away? These are the questions behind the NYS Unearthing Mars state lab—but it's surprisingly easy for the rulers, angles, and neatly drawn lines to steal the whole show.

This two-period Unearthing Mars pre-lab builds the reasoning before students begin the required investigation. Through a hands-on demonstration, scaled visual models, guided practice, and scientific history, students make sense of heliocentric and geocentric longitude, lines of sight, triangulation, and orbital patterns. They learn what the measurements represent and why the procedure works, rather than becoming very efficient at following directions they can't explain.

The goal is not to do the state lab for students. It is to help them walk into it with a mental model they can actually use—and a better understanding of how scientists reason from evidence they cannot observe directly.

    What Students Will Do

    • Use a classroom demonstration and scaled paper model to visualize how observations from different positions can locate an object.

    • Distinguish heliocentric longitude from geocentric longitude and connect each measurement to a point of view.

    • Work with lines of sight and triangulation to explain why two observations are needed and what an intersection represents.

    • Practice interpreting orbital patterns and consider why Mars's orbit does not form a perfect circle.

    • Explore how Kepler used Tycho Brahe's observations to challenge circular-orbit explanations, then use a reference to make sense of Kepler's Laws.

    Why This Resource Is Different

I built this around the logic students need before they ever pick up a ruler in the Unearthing Mars state lab. A student can draw a perfect line and still be unsure whether the angle is measured from Earth or the Sun—or why two observations let us locate a planet in the first place.

The demonstration and scaled paper model make that confusion visible while there's still time to address it. Students move from something they can see, to a model they can draw, to the astronomical reasoning behind the procedure. Kepler isn't there for a name-and-date cameo, either: his work helps students see what scientists do when their observations refuse to fit the model. This is preparation for the state lab, not a replacement for it.

    What's Included?

    • Structured student workbook for the two-period pre-lab

    • Hands-on classroom triangulation demonstration

    • Scaled paper model and visual supports for lines of sight and locating Mars

    • Guided practice with heliocentric and geocentric longitude, triangulation, and orbital patterns

    • Historical background on Tycho Brahe's observations and Kepler's model of planetary motion

    • Kepler's Laws reference and scaffolded reasoning activities

    The Details

Designed for high-school Earth & Space Science and NYS Regents classes preparing for the required Unearthing Mars lab. Plan for two class periods before the official state investigation. The resource focuses on the concepts and procedures students need to understand; it is a pre-lab, not a replacement for the state lab. The instruction uses a teacher-led demonstration, paper models, and guided student work.
